[Book Review] Storm Breaker by Nisha J. Tuli

ENDURE THE STORM. EARN YOUR PLACE. FULFIL YOUR DESTINY.

For nineteen-year-old Poet Graves, New Manhattan has always promised safety from the deadly electrical storms that ravage the worldย โ€•ย but only if she plays her part.

Raised within the ruling Houses and betrothed to a powerful heir, she arrives at the prestigious Amery Academy knowing her future has already been decided: pass the trials, join the Society, and secure her place among the elite. Fail, and she will be cast out beyond the cityโ€™s protection.

But Amery is nothing like she imagined. Its trials are brutal, its loyalties conditional, and its rules designed to expose weakness. As Poet struggles to survive, she must hide the truth that could get her executed: the storms donโ€™t fear her โ€• they answer back.

Defying her fatherโ€™s expectations, Poet dreams of becoming a Storm Breaker, someone trained to face the very forces others fear. But ambition can be deadly in a world where power is tightly held, and rebellion comes at a cost.

When a dangerous outsider from beyond the city walls enters the academy, Poet is drawn to him despite everything sheโ€™s been taught to believe. He threatens the life sheโ€™s been promised.

And choosing him could cost her not just her future, but her freedom.

Review

Uh this book literally had everything I love about dystopia! An atrocious caste system, insane rules, unlikable people, and an FMC trying to battle against everything sheโ€™s been taughtโ€”fighting for who she wants to be rather than who she should be. And if that wasnโ€™t enough, an outsider MMC who has more secrets than a confessional.

I loved the academy setting, although 90% of the students and staff are absolutely horrendousโ€”like no one is likableโ€”which just added to the vibe that Poet really was battling against everything. I immediately knew something was up with what Poet had been told about how the world works, which isnโ€™t a huge leap because thatโ€™s usually the path for these types of stories.

There are trials in this book and while theyโ€™re made out to be important, they donโ€™t overtake the storytelling, they just complement the journey Poet is on.ย

I liked getting to know Poet and her powers, which are different and really interesting in how they work. It definitely feels like this book only scratched the surface of them.

Rook is an enigma, very mysterious. I thought his connection with Poet was really well done. Itโ€™s a slow burn and they pretty much dislike each other on sight, which I loved. Iโ€™m very excited to see all his secrets revealed.ย

That brings us to the endingโ€ฆ this is where being an ARC reader has its downfall because my jaw was on the floor at that last paragraphโ€”and now I have to wait even longer for the next book!

My Rating: 5/5 ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ
